I had the pleasure of watching the movie Gamer last not long ago. I went in expecting a movie about gaming, which it was to a small extent. However, the game was not the main focus of this movie.

This movie starts out showing the fictional game, Slayers. You watch as a team of players tries to make it to the save point without getting killed. It is one players 27th game out of the 30 he must survive to win his freedom.

As the movie progresses, we meet this players wife who is also playing a different next generation simulation game, called Society. This game is like the Sims, but with real people playing each avatar.

I hesitate to give away much more, for the movie does have a few twists which are interesting. However, if anyone’s not watched the movie, knowing ahead will more or less ruin some of it for them.

I will say that the movie has some good moments and is very watchable. It was definitely not what I had expected going in. It has more of a drama aspect than I had expected. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not what I expected.

What gets me about the movie is that it is all together too plausible. We are moving forward technologically at an unprecedented rate. It might not happen in our generation or our children’s; However, assuming the world and humanity make it so long, I don’t see it as being science fiction for the generation after our children's.

This scares me. To take another human being and dictate their actions through remote signals just seems very wrong to me. Watch the ending carefully, and you will see what scares me the most about such things.
